그 양림동에서, 2013년 3월 5일 문화예술기획사 아트주(Art Z00)의 정헌기 대표가 양림동 언덕 위에 위치한 호남신학대 학교로부터 1950년대 붉은 벽돌 건물인 옛 선교사의 사택을 10년간 임차하여 입주 작가들의 예술창작소로 개소한 것이 호랑가시나무창작소의 시작이자, 오늘날 양림동이 광주를 대표하는 문화콘텐츠로 자리매김하게 된 역사적 순간이었다. 정헌기 대표는 선교사 사택 옆에 있는 400년 넘게 자생하는 호랑가시나무의 이름을 창작소의 명칭으로 사용하여, 지금 '호랑가시나무'는 광주와 양림동의 역사와 문화를 상징하는 대표적 콘텐츠이자 브랜드가 되었다. 

2013~4년부터 현재까지 호랑가시나무 언덕주변은 버려지고 외면된 공간 (20세기 초에 버려 진 선교사 가옥 두 채와 오래된 호랑가시나무한그루가 있는 곳)에서 자연과 함께 사계절 변하는 곳으로 바뀌었다. 이곳은 선교사들의 구사택이었지만 따뜻하게 맞아주는 게스트하우스와 다양한 지역과 해외 및 외국작가들을 품어 줄 수 있는 활기찬 스튜디오공간으로 재단장 되었다.

In Yanglim-dong, on March 5, 2013, Art Zoo CEO Jeong Heon-gi signed a 10-year lease for a red brick building from the 1950s, owned by Honam Theological University, to establish a studio for resident artists. This marked the inception of Horanggasinamu Studio and a pivotal moment in establishing Yanglim-dong as a vibrant cultural hub representing Gwangju today. Jeong chose the name "Horanggasinamu," inspired by the ancient horanggasinamu tree that has thrived next to the missionary residence for over 400 years. Today, "Horanggasinamu" stands as a symbol of Gwangju's rich history and cultural heritage in Yanglim-dong.

Since 2013/14, the area surrounding Horanggasinamu Hill has transformed from a neglected space—once home to two derelict early 20th-century houses and an ancient holly tree—into a vibrant green oasis that evolves with the seasons. The former residences of Christian missionaries have been beautifully refurbished into a welcoming guesthouse and a lively studio space, attracting a diverse array of local, national, and international artists.
