광주광역시 근대역사문화마을 양림동에 위치한 호랑가시나무창작소는 1904년 서양선교사들이 조성한 지역의 언더우드 사택을 창작공간으로 사용하고 있습니다. 이곳에 정착한 선교사들은 광주의 근대화에 밀접한 영향을 미쳤고 한국의 여성인권, 의료, 교육 등 한국의 선교역사에 커다란 영향을 미친 곳입니다. 이 역사적 장소들을 기반으로 저희 창작소는 청년작가 육성, 국내외 작가교류 그리고 지역사회에 기여하는 것을 목표로 매년 레지던시 프로그램을 운영하고 있습니다. 광주는 한국의 예향이라 불리는 도시로 아시아 최초이자 최고의 권위를 가진 현대미술 국제비엔날레인 ‘광주비엔날레’가 1995년부터 열리고 있으며 한국 최대이자 세계에서도 찾아보기 힘든 규모의 문화예술 콤플렉스인 ‘국립아시아문화전당’이 있는 도시입니다.
호랑가시나무창작소는 도심 한복판에 있지만 양림산 바로 아래 위치한 덕분에 공기가 맑고 매우 조용하며 근처에 근대역사문화 유산이 산재해 있어 주변을 산책하는 것만으로도 많은 영감을 얻을 수 있는 곳입니다. 또한 반경2km 이내에 국립아시아문화전당과 광주의 문화거점들이 있어 걸어서 돌아 볼 수 있고 종합병원 3곳 및 도서관, 전통시장이 있어 작가들이 머물면서 창작 활동에 하기에 안정된 인프라를 갖추고 있습니다.
2021년엔 호랑가시나무창작소의 전시공간인 아트폴리곤이 광주비엔날레 전시관 중 하나로 사용 되며 뮌휀, 리스본, 이탈리아, 비엔나 등과 교류하고 있습니다. 앞으로도 적극적 교류를 통해 역사와 전통이 있는 레지던시가 되고자 합니다.
Located in the hub of Yangnim-dong’s historical site, Horanggasy Creative Studio provides a multidisciplinary artist-in-residence program annually with the purpose of supporting young artists (both domestic and international) as well as contributing to the local community. The program is held in a building that was once used as private housing for the Missionaries in 1904. During their time here, the Missionaries played a pivotal role in the modernization of Gwangju through the works such as women’s rights, medical care, and education. Gwangju is also considered the home of Korean art, thus Asia’s first and most prestigious international contemporary art exhibition called “Gwangju Biennale” has been held here since 1995. Additionally, Korea’s largest cultural and artistic complex called Asia Culture Center is located nearby the Studio.
Despite Horanggasy Creative Studio being in the center of the city, its location being at the bottom of Yangnim Mountain creates a harmonious juxtaposition. Various prominent Korean artists in the past have acquired artistic inspiration just by walking around in the Yangnim-dong neighborhood. Regarding hospitality, there are three general hospitals, libraries, and traditional markets all within the walking distance of the Studio that allows the artists to fully dedicate their time to creative activities without having to worry about basic necessities.
Starting from 2021, Art Polygon attached to the Horanggasy Creative Studio has been nominated to be used as one of the exhibition sites for “Gwangju Biennale.” Since the beginning of the establishment of the residence program, there have been various cross-cultural interactions between artists from Munich, Lisbon, Italy, and Vienna. Our goal is to continue to provide artists from various backgrounds a creative space and aid them in researching and producing art. We wish to become the artist-in-residence program with history and prestige.

호랑가시나무창작소는 버려졌던 장소에 예술과 삶의 온기를 불어넣는 일에서 시작되었습니다. 20세기 초 선교사들이 머물던 이 언덕 위 낡은 집들은, 이제 다양한 예술가들의 창작이 태어나는 생기 가득한 스튜디오로 다시 태어났습니다.
이곳은 예술가와 지역, 그리고 일상의 경계를 허무는 실천의 공간입니다. 우리는 창작이 삶의 일부가 되는 도시, 예술이 관계를 매개하는 공동체를 꿈꿉니다.
양림동 언덕 위에 자리한 이 오래된 주택들은 예술가들의 숨결과 함께 새롭게 숨 쉬고 있습니다. 전시와 레지던시, 워크숍과 커뮤니티 프로그램을 통해, 우리는 예술을 매개로 한 다양한 만남을 이어왔고, 앞으로도 ‘함께 사는 삶’에 대한 상상과 실천을 꾸준히 확장해나갈 것입니다.
호랑가시나무창작소는 단순한 공간을 넘어서는, 살아 있는 장소입니다. 예술가들에게는 실험의 공간이자 잠시 머물 수 있는 쉼터로, 지역에는 새로운 흐름이 스며드는 열린 언덕으로 존재하고자 합니다. 우리는 앞으로도 느리고 유연하게, 그러나 깊고 단단하게 예술을 통한 만남과 변화를 이어가고자 합니다.
이곳을 찾는 모든 이들이 자신만의 질문과 가능성을 품고 다시 떠날 수 있기를 바랍니다.
Horanggasy Creative Studio began with the desire to breathe warmth—of life and art—into a place once abandoned. The old houses atop this hill, once home to missionaries in the early 20th century, have now been transformed into vibrant studios where new artistic creation takes root.
This is a space of practice that dissolves boundaries—between artists and local communities, between art and everyday life. We envision a city where creation is part of daily living, and a community where relationships are nurtured through art.
These historic homes on the hill in Yangnim-dong now breathe anew with the presence of artists. Through exhibitions, residencies, workshops, and community programs, we have fostered a wide range of encounters through art—and we will continue to expand our imagination and practice toward a life lived together.
Horanggasy Creative Studio is more than just a physical space; it is a living site of artistic possibility. For artists, it is a place of experimentation and rest. For the local community, it is an open hill where new flows and ideas quietly arrive. We remain committed to moving slowly and flexibly, yet deeply and steadily, continuing the connections and transformations made possible through art.
